The Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (Presec-Legon), has emerged winners of the third edition of the Ghana Secondary Schools Moot Court competition held on October 29, 2022 at the Supreme Court.
They beat competition from 15 schools, including St Francis Xavier Minor Seminary, Ola Girls’ SHS, Alpha Beta Christian College, Aburi Girls’ SHS and Accra Academy.
Other schools that participated were Klo Agogo SHS, Labone SHS, Legacy Girls College, Mfantsiman Girls, Achimota School and West Africa SHS.
Presec-Legon received a trophy, certificates and a cash prize of ¢2,000 for winning the contest, while Legacy Girls' College and the Achimota School took the second and third places respectively.
The competition orgnanised by the University of Ghana School of Law is part of efforts to help the students develop their knowledge, understanding and application of the 1992 Constitution.
This year’s edition was held under the theme, ‘Enhancing Civic Participation and Knowledge of our Constitution Amongst Young People for Personal Development and Nation Building.’
In an interaction with Joy Learning, an officer of the competition, Joel Telfer, said that the goal of the competition is to, among others, ensure that participants are able to represent and advocate for themselves.
“It will also provide the opportunity for students to develop their research, writing and oral advocacy skills and to encourage SHS students to further pursue a law career,” he added.
The first edition of the competition was held in 2017 but was put on hold due to financial constraints and, later, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
The first edition was won by St Thomas Aquinas SHS while the second, held in 2021, was won by St Mary’s SHS, Accra.
