Khadijatou Mohamed Mahmoud, an alleged victim of rape by the leader of the Polisario armed group, Brahim Ghali, has gone to the European Parliament in Brussels.
This is the framework of the hearings of the FEMM Commission of the European legislative institution on 'Sexual violence and rape as abuse of power'.
The I24News television channel devoted a report in which Ms Khadijatou, a young Saharawi, testified to the rape of which she was the victim in 2010 when she was still a minor.
The alleged author of this crime is Brahim Ghali, the leader of the Polisario armed group, who abused her with complete impunity.
Ghali was serving as a representative of the Polisario Armed Group in Algeria in 2010 when he allegedly raped the 18-year-old Sahrawi translator Khadijatou Mahmoud, who was visiting the so-called embassy in Algiers to retrieve a visa she was granted through an Italian NGO.
In 2013, Mahmoud found refuge in Sevilla, Spain, where she managed, with the support of her adoptive family, to file a complaint against Ghali.
Ghali has been wanted in Spain since 2008 for serious human rights violations, namely genocide, torture, and illegal detention against Canarian workers in the Sahara territory.
Eventually, in November 2016, the presumed rapist could not attend a pro-Polisario conference that was organized in Barcelona.
However, in 2018, the Spanish National Court rejected the complaint under the pretext that neither of the parties involved were Spanish.
On 1st June 2021, Spain’s National Court, which deals with terrorism and fraud-related cases, summoned the so-called Polisario armed group leader to answer for torture and genocide accusations before setting him free, under the pretext that the plaintiffs had failed to provide evidence he had committed any crime.
