Junior and Senior Staff of Metro Mass Transit Limited have laid down their tools over delays in the payment of salaries.
They have accused top Management of mismanaging the affairs of the company including failing to make money available to repair broken down vehicles, fuel buses and also delay in paying salaries.
All staff are asking for the immediate removal of all three managers of the company.
Some of the staff spoke to JoyNews detailing the challenges they have endured in the last five years.
“What is going on is not good. He himself (the manager) has seen that it is not good and has to step down. He should make it in a way that the buses should be on the road. Our salaries should be paid each month,” one staff said.
“I have been here for thirteen good years now. The company started sinking and sinking. Now we do not have enough buses, we are having less than two hundred buses. The company is not moving,” another staff lamented.
Secretary of the Senior Staff Union of the company, Anthony Appiah said they will only call off the strike if all three top managers are removed from office.
“The three executives must go, they should readjust the Management and we will start work. We will do this today, tomorrow and at a time when we see that no response is coming, we will ask everybody to stay home.
“Their office should be aligned with our grievances and if we deserve to go as workers, we should go and if they supposed to go they should go,” he told JoyNews.
JoyNews’ Michael Asharley was earlier at the bus terminals in Accra and reported that buses have been left at the terminals with no drivers attending to them.
Meanwhile, the Communications Manager at Metro Mass Transit, George Krobeah in an interview with JoyNews explained that the company is only owing two months salaries (August and September salaries).
He said the action taken by the staff is not in the right direction as the company has its own processes to deal with grievances from workers.
According to him, the strike action is surprising to Management as the company has commenced payment of August salaries.
“The whole action is coming as a surprise to Management because as a company, we have our own way of doing things. Individuals cannot just wake up and declare strike action just because they feel they have concerns. The company has laid down procedures for undertaking some of these actions.
“The Company currently is owing only two months' salaries. We have started paying August salaries and by Friday all things being equal, we will finish with payroll on August salary and that means we are owing only arrears of one month's salary,” he stated.
