Anglogold Ashanti Ghana is pleased with the support of local communities in Obuasi to ward off illegal miners from its concession.
The company has had to deal with illegal miners looting large quantities of high-grade gold bearing materials.
Managers are however pleased with recent interest of residents to rid the mines of 'galamsey' activities.
Over the years, Anglogold Ashanti has struggled with dealing with the activities of illegal miners on its Obuasi Mines.
Efforts have been made to stop the illegal miners, including arrests.
Anglogold is also implementing a 3-year socio-economic development plan to offer alternatives to the miners.
Senior Manager, Sustainability, Emmanuel Baidoo, is happy with the gains made so far with the support of residents.
“Some time ago, we had a number of people in Obuasi who normally hail the activities of illegal miners. Now we are in a situation where people warn miners to leave the mine alone. So, for that aspect, we have seen something significant,” he said.
To keep Anglogold’s concession safe, security systems have been enhanced at the mine.
“It’s a gradual process. We have beefed up security systems. There has been support from government and state security agencies. Day in and day out, we review our security structures. This is necessary because there are people in our society who will still want to thrive on illegality,” he said.
Emmanuel Baidoo spoke to LuvBiz during a familiarization visit to the Kumasi Unit of the Multimedia Group.
He commended the media group for its professionalism and support for business growth.
“How do we use our diverse interests to drive the human agenda? I strongly believe that is what Multimedia exists for. That is what Anglogold Ashanti exists for. That is truly why and how our paths crossed,” he said.
General Manager of Luv FM and Nhyira FM, James Aglah, emphasized the company’s commitment to playing its role in national development.
