Consultant for the multi-purpose Pwalugu Dam, Prof. David Millar is doubtful about the completion of the project within the government’s stipulated period.
Prof. David Millar told JoyNews that the exclusion of the dam in government’s budget shows no indication that it will be built.
He added that Ghanaians should reduce their expectations towards the completion of the dam, particularly due to the current economic hardship.
“I keep repeating that I have not seen it in the budget so if we really want it to happen, let it feature in the budget. But I do not see any hope of this featuring because of the exigencies of the economic situation in the country today, both internal and external,” he said.
The Pwalugu Multi-purpose dam project was initiated by the government and construction was officially scheduled to begin in February 2020 and be completed in 50 months.
Thirty months have now passed and JoyNews investigations on the ground show that there are no physical signs of the ongoing construction of the dam which was estimated to cost $993 million.
In October last year, the Commercial Manager for Power China International Group in charge of the project, Chen Junming said the lack of fund is threatening completion of the project.
Presenting the state of affairs at the site to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Mr. Chen Junming told the Committee the giant funding gap will inevitably affect the construction process.
A JoyNews documentary titled; 'A Dam of Promises' produced by Upper East Regional Correspondent, Albert Sore tracks the progress of work on this dam.
The full documentary will be aired on Monday, September 12, 2022 at 8:30pm on the JoyNews channel.
