The application for tax clearance certificate will be done through online processes from October 2022.
The move is expected to eliminate the incident of fake tax certificate and also corruption associated with tax clearance in the country.
According to Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, government is ben on ensuring that the nation mobilises adequate revenue for the country.
“Looking at the problems associated with tax clearance certificate, I have directed the leadership of the Ghana Revenue Authority to automate the process of obtaining a clearance certificate. And I’m glad to announce that the process is completed and will go live in October this year”, he disclosed at the Annual International Tax Conference by the Institute of Taxation Ghana.
“You apply for the certificate online, the system will do the necessary background checks to ensure that you have no outstanding tax payment; and then issue an electronic tax clearance certificate on your mobile phone”, he mentioned.
He explained that many other reforms are underway to make tax payments easier for businesses and individuals.
He is confident that the introduction of an automated tax clearance certificate will be a game changer for taxation in Ghana.
Tax Consultant, Abdullah Ali-Nakyea, urged the Ghana Revenue Authority to re-profile the country's tax population.
According to him, this will help bridge the tax deficit gap and facilitate the addition of businesses that are operating offshore onto the tax net.
“Nowadays businesses have transformed from physical presence to the internet and mobile applications. We need to get all these individuals behind to honour their tax obligations so that we bridge the tax gap.”
“This is why I always call on the Ghana Revenue Authority to re-profile the tax population to get on board all these businesses and operations” he charged.
The Annual International Tax Conference by the Institute of Taxation Ghana is under the theme: improving domestic tax revenue mobilization, a consultative and inclusive approach.
The International tax conference is a three days event hosted in Ghana for tax practitioners in Africa.
