Sprinters Benjamin Azamati and Joseph Paul Amoah will feature in the 100m heats on day one of the 2022 World Athletics championships in Oregon, Eugene.
Benjamin Azamati who has run the ninth fastest time in the world this year clocked 9.90s in the Texas relays in March to secure qualification to the event. In what has been a remarkable year of the National 100m record holder he run 9.96s and 9.86 (+3.0) for West Texas A&M University before competing at 2 diamond league races this year.
The ASICS athlete came fourth behind Olympic 200m champion Andre De Grasse at Bislett games (10.15s) and won the 100m (10.25)-1.6m/s at the Paris diamond league days later. Azamati will discover the men he will go up against for a chance in the semifinal after the preliminary round is completed at midday at the Hayward field.
The former University of Ghana student failed to make the 100m semifinal at the Tokyo Olympics after falling behind Jamaican star Yohan Blake and is hoping to do better in Eugene.
Joseph Paul Amoah will be on the tracks as well for the 100m Heats. Having competed in the same event at the 2019 edition of the World Athletics Championships, the 200m national record is confident of making the semifinal this year.
Joseph Amoah recorded sub-ten in 100m for the first time when he run a personal best of 9.94s at the MSU Legacy Meet in April and is currently ranked 13th by World Athletics. There will be huge competition for places in the 100m semifinals following a great season with the likes of Fred Kerley (9.76s) Trayvon Bromell (9.81s) Johan Blake (9.85s), Fred Omanyala (9.85s) Christian Coleman (9.87s) and Oblique Seville all look to grab spots.
The 100m Heats are scheduled to begin on Friday at 18.50 Oregon time (1.50am Ghana time on Saturday, July 16).
