Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, has put her acting career spanning over 25 years on hold to pursue her political ambitions.
In a video posted to Instagram, she confirmed that she has been nominated as the deputy governorship candidate for the Lagos state's Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
She is a deputy to PDP's governorship candidate Dr Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor.
Funke Akindele, alias Jennifer, explained that she sees this next phase of her life as a bigger opportunity to serve humanity including working tirelessly to improve the lives of youths in Lagos.
“I am a Lagosian born out of Ikorodu so when the PDP gubernatorial candidate asked me to be his deputy governor I saw it as an opportunity to help liberate and improve the welfare of our people, particularly the deprived youth, women, and girl child."
“My decision is not only to accept this huge responsibility to see our dear Lagos live up to its full potential with the people as its immediate beneficiaries," the actress said.
She called out to residents of Lagos to throw their weight behind her and Jandor as they aim to make the city a better place for all.
"Over the years a lot of youths have been ignored and victimised for daring to have a dream so I use this opportunity to call out all well-meaning residents of the nation, especially the youths. It’s indeed time to use our numerical strength to our full advantage and time to rally ourselves and support our own."
Funke Akindele stated that accepting to run as deputy governor is a task she takes with reverence and utmost sense of responsibility in hopes to make a change in her country.
"I’m not unaware of the cost of this assignment on my vibrant career which I must now necessarily put on hold. It is a huge personal sacrifice but my resolve is no sacrifice is too much for the actualisation of the urgent mission to rescue our people and dear state."
