Oti Yeboah complex limited has donated 200 seedling guards to the Bono Regional Forest Service Division of the forestry commission to support Green Ghana Day on June 10, 2022.
The Managing Director of the timber and wood processing company at Abesim in the Sunyani Municipality, Meister Afriyie, said the gesture forms part of their belief in the sustainability of the forest cover and greening the environment.
He noted that previous trees planted were often destroyed by animals or human activities, hence the seedling guards to protect some of the new seedlings that would be planted during the green Ghana day.
He made the remarks, Thursday, June 9, 2022, during a short ceremony in Sunyani to hand over the guards to the forestry commission through the Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene.
“We believe in the sustainability of the earth, and it is the responsibility of everybody. We have a conscious policy of planting and nurturing our plantations across the region, and we see this as an opportunity to serve the communities and the country”, he said.
Mr. Afriyie also said, apart from the ecological problems that could be solved, trees such as cocoanuts and palm trees have the potential of cutting down unemployment in the country, sustainably since a lot of industries could be created around these trees.
He, therefore, urged everyone to be involved in the Green Ghana project and show commitment to protecting the trees.
The MD of Oti Yeboah Complex limited, Meister Afriyie, said, having been in the timber and wood processing business since 1986, they have a policy of planting 4 trees for every tree they cut and would continue to support tree-planting initiatives even as they plant two hectors of trees at the company’s premises this year aside from their other plantations at Tain and Asukese.
Bono Regional Forestry Commission Manager, Isaac Noble Eshun, said the objective of the Green Ghana project is not just to plant trees and leave them to the mercies of animals but to see to their successful growth to serve the intended purpose.
He said their appeals to stakeholders to help support the protection of the trees culminated in Oti Yeboah Complex limited fulfilling a pledge by donating the seedling guards.
He said though it would go a long way to help protect the minimum target of 1.2 million trees they have set to plant this year in the region, other organizations are also welcome on board with the planting and protection of the trees.
Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, thanked the company for their gesture aimed at helping the planted seedlings grow into trees and assured them the guards would be put to their purposeful use.
She said because when the “last tree dies, the last man dies”, more trees need to be planted to sustain the environment, and therefore appealed to other sister companies to support the Green Ghana day by providing more seedling protectors.
The regional Green Ghana Day will take place at the Sunyani Technical University on June 10, 2022.
