The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has stressed the need for Ghana to prioritise holistic education aimed at covering all dimensions of social life.
According to Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, every good education should develop the mind, heart and hand of an individual to enable the person to contribute to the total development of his society.
Speaking at a ceremony to hand over a newly built senior high school at Akyem Boadua in the Eastern Region, Rev. Dr. Mante said the Presbyterian Church is geared towards providing students with such holistic education.
“The Presbyterian Church has a basic philosophy of education which is in three parts. Educating the head, the heart, and the hands and it is very important that if you chose to come to a Presbyterian school, we are going to train your head which is the academic training but for us, that is not enough, it is not holistic.
“The second part is the heart where we teach you about the devotion to God, because we do believe that the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom and then the third one is the usage of your hands and your whole body to work,”
The new state-of-the-art school building was funded by the Chairman of the Universal Hospital Group, Samuel Patrick Oduro.
The edifice will be named, Presbyterian Model Senior High School. Samuel Patrick Oduro who is also an indigene of Akyem Boadua named the block after his late mother, Nana Abena Owusua I.
Built on a two-acre land, the school has an ICT laboratory, an 18-unit water closet, a teacher’s lounge, a mechanised water system, storage room among other facilities.
Mr. Oduro in his speech disclosed that he was motivated to put up such a facility due to the lack of a senior high school in the town.
“My main motivation, I think I would say to do such a project was to honour the memory of my late mother, Nana Abena Owusua I, the late Queen mother of this town who valued and cherished education over any ethnic section and also as a corporate social responsibility obligation of my company, Universal Hospital Group. We saw it fit to undertake this project as I contribute to the educational needs of the people and children of Akyem Bodua,” he said.
The Denkyembour District Chief Executive, Seth Ofosu expressed gratitude to the philanthropist for the gesture extended to the town.
