The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources has intervened in resolving a long standing lavatory crisis at Mmofraturo Girls School.
Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah handed over a solar-powered 8-seater toilet to the School which is located in in the Old Tafo Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The solar-powered 8-seater lavatory, fitted with mechanized boreholes, is an upgrade of other sanitary facilities on the school premises which has been in use for the past 80 years.
The construction of the facility is part of the Sanitation Ministry's policy to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 - access to adequate sanitation and hygiene and ending open defecation, especially among girls by 2030.
The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, who is an old student, urged Management of the school to ensure proper maintenance of the facility. "This project started about 15 months ago. The school's toilet was dilapidated and as old girls, we thought that we needed to raise money so as to build a new one for the school. So we raised some money, but I realised as the sector Minister, I owe the school some obligation," she said.
The construction of the solar-powered lavatory by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency is to cut down bills in the school.
Chief Executive Officer of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Worlanyo Kwadjo Siabi, said the agency is committed to providing safe drinking water and related sanitation services.
We have been talking to the world bank to see how we can support some basic schools concerning WASH system.
We're moving away from the KVIP concept, so we had to construct an 8 seater water closet and because we want to ensure that it is sustained, we used a system that will make water accessible regularly and also cut the energy cost, so solar was the best option," Mr. Worlanyo Kwadjo Siabi noted.
The construction of the solar-powered lavatory at Mmofraturo Girls School followed a resolution by the old students association to provide the school with a befitting public place of convenience.
The Headmistress of Mmofraturo School, Reverend Pauline Pieterson, appealed, "to benevolent organizations and corporate institutions to provide support to the all-girls institution".
