The Immigration Service is streamlining processes to speed up acquisition of the travel documents.
The move follows the announcement last week of the introduction of an ECOWAS passport for Ghanaian travelers.
Media reports in recent times suggest the changes are unpopular with immigration service staff, who made financial gains from lengthy passport processing.
Public Relations Officer at the Immigration Service, Maude Quainoo, said the new arrangement had become necessary because earlier processes were continuously being abused.
“The essence is to bring sanity into the system,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, more details are emerging about the ECOWAS passport that will replace the existing national passport.
Last week, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Muhammed Mumuni, revealed a biometric Ghanaian passport with an ECOWAS inscription would be introduced this September.
According to the Ghana Immigration Service, an education program would soon commence to make the benefits of the new passport clear.
