Ghana’s contemporary Artist, Ibrahim Mahama believes historical sites are crucial in the advancement of art.
He says they will provide the opportunity for upcoming artists to think of new ways in the art sphere.
“There are art forms artists produce and there are art which emerge by themselves.
“When we’re able to take ownership of these places and the aesthetics within them and we’re able to preserve them, it will create new freedoms within art.
“So artists who’ll be born in the 21st century and beyond will have the ability to practice art on the scale, which wouldn’t have been possible before,” he explained.
Mr. Mahama added “It creates new points within our histories and timelines that can serve as tourist places that can generate revenue.”
Mr. Mahama, who is now a PhD student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, was speaking at a lecture titled: “The burden of the void. Potential of capital failures,” on Thursday.
Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has distinguished himself the world over in the contemporary art field.
Locally, his notable works include, covering the entire KNUST Great Hall with Jute sacks.
An attendee who spoke to JoyNews said he has been inspired by the lecture.
“It was very inspiring. Responsibility is what I took from his lecture,” said Emmanuel Aboagye.
