The District Chief Executive of Ada West, Sampson Tetteh Kpankpah, has dismissed claims that floods that occurred in parts of Ada on Wednesday were caused by Electrochem Ghana’s operations.
He said the affected communities, including Sonkope, Wokumagbe and Akplabanya were not in the domain of the company’s concession.
Speaking to journalists at Ada in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Kpankpah said: “The water flowed downstream into the above-mentioned communities when a portion of the Dawa Irrigation Dam collapsed and emptied its content onto the low-lying lands and further to the communities following the downpour on Wednesday.”
Hundreds, including women and children, were displaced while several buildings submerged due to the downpour.
The DCE said the company was supporting the Assembly to dredge canals and create new water paths to facilitate free flow of water.
Madam Gladys Akwetey, a victim and resident of Wokumagbe, said although the community had been experiencing recurrent flooding, the volume of water that ran into the community and the intensity was very high and scary.
She commended the Assembly and Electrochem Ghana for their swift intervention to prevent further disaster, which could result in the whole community submerging.
Another indigene of the area, Isaac Amanor, thanked the District Chief Executive, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and Electrochem Ghana for coming in to create more accessible ways to channel the water into the sea.
“I guess the community would have been submerged by now but for their intervention; they deserve commendation”, he emphasised.
