Founder of the Saint Monica Widows Association in the Daffiama Bussie-Issa District has made an impassioned plea to the government to assist victims of last year's flood in the Upper West Region, particularly widows.
Reverend Sister Gabriel Nonnaah made the appeal when the Managing Partner at Sory@law, Mr. Thadeus Sory, donated some food items to them as part of the celebration of Easter.
Speaking to JoyNews, she said most of the victims of the floods are widows who have several children and other dependents, yet they have little or no food to eat or cloth to wear.
“The government must come to our aid in order for us to assist the widows. They must assist the widows. Some families have more than 6 children, 5 children, but no proper food to feed them, and even getting clothes is difficult. Because they don't eat enough, they are even crying for their stomachs rather than clothing,” she appealed.
Mr. Thadeus Sory, stated that while the items may not solve the people's problems, their purpose is to draw attention to the public to come and donate and show love to the people.
After receiving the items, the Association's Chaplain, Reverend Father James Yerb, thanked the Association for their generous gesture.
Last year, on August 12, 2021, the Upper West Region experienced flash floods that cut off six districts from the regional capital, stranding hundreds of commuters and vehicles.
Some four districts were also cut off in the Savannah Region after water from flood-affected communities in the Upper West Region rushed through the area.
The affected localities are; Sawla, Tuna Kalba, North and West Gonja.
