A counsellor, Theresa Wiafe-Asante, says contrary to what many Christians may believe, God does not just grant good marriages as gifts to good Christians.
“I have come in contact with pastors, people in church, very religious people whose marriages are not doing well at all, these are people who are supposed to be speaking with God, sitting with Him, and their marriages should be doing better, but most of them do not have that,” she said.
According to her, good marriages result from deliberate efforts and hard work from both people in the marriage.
"It is making it work,” she insisted.
Mrs Wiafe-Asante, popularly known as Mama T, said this on Joy FM’s flagship family and relationship show, Home Affairs, when they discussed why and how certain love relationships give way to hatred and resentment.
The Family Life Counselor, who is also the wife of a pastor, added that many marriages, especially ones involving Christians, gradually become bitter because the couple ignored many red flags that should have been paid attention to and dealt with during the premarital phase.
These Christian couples, according to her, hoped fervently that their spouses would change once they got married.
However, Mama T stated emphatically, “the ‘I do’ at the front of the altar is not the magic wand that would change anything”.
She stated that if, for instance, issues of your partner being domineering, disrespectful, dishonest, physically and emotionally abusive were tolerated during the courting phase, these should be ready to be tolerated as well during the marriage.
“What you close your eyes over at the very little stage, it matures and comes to bring you hurt," she said
Mrs Wiafe- Asante encouraged couples to put in the necessary work to make their marriages successful as the other beautiful marriages people look up to have done.
