The Member of Parliament for Sege Constituency has criticised the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for not providing enough relief items to persons affected by the recent tidal wave in the Ada West and East constituencies.
According to Christian Corleytey Otuteye, the mattresses and food items that have so far been distributed are inadequate to cater for the households that were severely hit by the disaster.
Several homes in communities such as Lolonya, Agblabanya, Anyamam, Azizanya, Kpoji and Otlorkpe were destroyed and flooded during the incident that took place last weekend.
Many residents were displaced while others lost their fishing tools, livestock and other indispensable valuable to the misfortune.
Speaking in an interview on Prime Morning, Wednesday, Mr Otuteye blamed both NADMO and the Works and Housing Ministry for the incident, saying the construction of the sea defence project started in erstwhile Mahama administration have been unduly delayed for unknown reasons.
“Come to what support they have given to the people; so funny to hear that they brought one of the communities that suffered severe tidal wave effect 17 mattresses as of today, for so many homes.
“Rice – 30kg, 10 bags; students mattresses, 15; Frytol, three boxes; soap, three boxes; that is from the Assembly member who also doubles as the Presiding Member of the Assembly,” he stated.
He added: “This tidal wave effect on the people of Ada West is long overdue. Somewhere in 2012, Hon Bagbin was then the Sector Minister for Works and Housing and he supervised that of Ada East...so, around 2016, President Mahama planned to extend from Ada East to Ada West through Ningo Prampram, Kpone Katamanso all the way to the western side – they started and have done that of Ada East.
“But from 2017 up till now, in other words President Nana Akufo-Addo came five good years now, no sign…all of a sudden, we could see that they have jumped to Ningo Prampram. What is the emergency situation at Ningo Prampram more than that of Ada for which they have to skip over Sege to Ningo Prampram? Ask NADMO; do they have their priority areas for which they want the Minister for Works and Housing to look at first?” he quizzed.
Speaking on the same show, Communications Director for NADMO, George Ayisi, stated that the organisation does not distribute relief items to affected people.
He said a technical team in such communities handles those issues to ensure that vulnerable groups are well catered for.
