When it comes to Ghanaian Music, particularly the rap genre, two names that cannot be forgotten are legendary contemporary hiplife artiste, Jerry Anaba, well known as Okomfour Kwadee, and Ga Rap legend, Nii Addo Quaynor, also known as Tinny.
These two may not be dominating the industry like before, but their music is timeless.
Tinny can be remembered as the artiste who broke into the predominantly Twi-dominated hiplife music with his fast rhyming raps and Ga hit songs.
Kwadee is also known to be the artiste that told stories through music with his trademark powerful traditional lyrics.
They have been the voices behind great hits including "Ka wo nan to so", "Komfo se koo", "Kweku Samson", etc (all by Okomfour Kwadee), and "Lorgoligi", "Naa me", "Obi Do ba", "Zingologo", "Makola" Kwakwe, etc (Tinny).
To climax the Ghana Month celebration on the Super Morning Show, listeners had the chance to tell the world about who amongst the two, is their favorite.
Out of a total of 12 callers, 9 chose Okomfour Kwadee and 3 in favor of Tinny. Their choices were based on the lyrics, melodies, flow, great chords, etc.
Fafa from Newtown, rooted for Tinny. “Tinny for me every day, anytime,” she said.
Another caller, Aunty Yaa, on the other hand, rooted for Kwadee. According to her, “Kwadee is a legend.“
Mawuli from Sunyani, said both artistes are great. He said “Tinny is just like Lord Kenya, Okomfour Kwadee is just like Obrafour. We have the storytellers who have their style of play and they run with it and we have the street rappers who are known for good lyrics and storytelling. Its Kwadee for the former and for good rap, it's Tinny,” he said.
Merries from Achimota was of a different opinion. She emphasised that “you can’t compare Tinny to Komfour Kwadee, Never!”
Kweku from Pentecost University also said, “Kwadee is a legend.” She justified her statement by saying that “Kwadee’s style and the story he brings out through his music, are so unique.”
Kwame from Lashibi said “Kwadee all the way.”
Adwoa from Tema rooted for Okomfour Kwadee “any day, any time,” she stressed.
Ben from Adentan said, “Tinny all day.”
Lincoln also rooted for Kwadee. “He is a champion guy,” he stressed. Agyeman also said, ”Kwadee all the way.”
Okomfour Kwadee, who could best be described as a storyteller in the hiplife industry came onto the Ghanaian music scene in 2001 when he released his debut "Kwadee".
He wooed music lovers with his story-telling style while using powerful and traditional lyrics.
Okomfour Kwadee who hails from Navrongo in the Upper East Region, attended Martyrs of Uganda Preparatory School in Kumasi after which he proceeded to Navrongo Secondary School.
Kwadee has since birth, dreamt of becoming a musician. His dreams came to reality when he was discovered by Vybetown Records, a subsidiary of Vybetown Entertainment Consult, an entertainment consultancy based in Kumasi.
He has four albums to his credit- "Kwadee", "Metoaso", "Okomfo Se Koo" and "Nsem Pi".
Tinny got into the music industry at the age of 8, by singing and rapping at parties and funfairs. In 1994 he started performing at Fun World, an entertainment programme that was organized every Sunday at the Ghana National Theatre. His first album was not successful because the engineering works were not so good.
Subsequently, Tinny has recorded several albums and made an impact in Ghana and Nigeria. He is the toast of the youth and an idol to many. He has featured on several songs and has always been rated among the best hiplife artistes.
