The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) says it expects the President to announce a salary increment during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, Wednesday, March 30, 2022.
President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, emphasised that given the financial, social, and worsening economic challenges, some assistance on the part of government is required.
“Recognising that the economy is in dire straits and the hardest hit are public sector workers, I am expecting the President to acknowledge that fact and make that concession to the workers of this country.”
“I am expecting a grand principle to be announced that as we move forward, the President will give some cola of 15 per cent to workers to mitigate their financial situation. I am expecting that strongly,” Mr Carbonu said on Accra-based Citi News.
With the country dealing with growing inflation, high fuel costs, and a general high cost of living, many Ghanaians wait for President Akufo-Addo's State of the Nation Address.
Last week, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, announced temporary measures to mitigate the hardships being experienced by Ghanaians.
Many government expenditure cuts were announced.
However, several economists have expressed worry that the country’s economy is on the verge of collapse if proper interventions are not implemented as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has indicated that there will be a review of the salary structure.
