Chris Rock didn’t know Jada Pinkett Smith when he joked about her bald head at the 2022 Oscars, according to TMZ.
“[He] doesn’t have a mean bone in his body,” a source told the outlet on Monday.
Will Smith smacked Rock, 57, for poking fun at his wife on Sunday night.
“Jada, I love you, ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it,” Rock quipped onstage as he prepared to present Best Documentary.
Smith, 53, laughed off the remark at first, but once he saw Pinkett Smith’s furious reaction, the “King Richard” star became incensed himself and stormed the stage to accost Rock in defense of his spouse.
Once he returned to his seat, Smith repeatedly shouted at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth!”
Rock calmly responded, “That was the greatest night in the history of television” — and promised not to mention Pinkett Smith, 50, again.
Pinkett Smith, who debuted a shaved head last summer, suffers from alopecia and has been vocal about her struggle with hair loss.
“Now at this point, I can only laugh,” she said in an Instagram video posted months ago, pointing out a completely bald patch on her head.
“Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia. Look at this line right here … it just showed up like that. And this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide, so I thought I’d just share it so y’all not asking any questions.”
In response to Smith’s defense of his spouse, the Academy said Sunday night that it “does not condone violence of any form.” By Monday, the organization stated that it “condemns” Smith’s actions and revealed that a “formal review” has been launched.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Smith is likely to be disciplined and may even have his Academy membership suspended, which members are calling for. However, his award for Best Actor — his first Oscar won Sunday night for his role in “King Richard” — is less likely to be revoked.
Rock has not filed a police report against Smith for his onstage slap, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Although Sean “Diddy” Combs exclusively told Page Six that Smith and Rock settled their feud Sunday night, some sources say the men have not spoken since the onscreen incident.
