A chronic kidney disease survivor, Abigail Ashley, has dispelled the myth that one can be cured after undergoing kidney dialysis.
According to the health advocate, undergoing kidney dialysis only manages the disease and does not cure it.
“People have to understand that dialysis is part of management of kidney disease, it’s not to cure. So you don’t assume that once you are on management, your kidney problem is sorted out,” he stated.
She also noted that transplant during the kidney management process does not also cure the disease.
Speaking in an interview on the Ultimate Health on Sunday, Abigail Ashley recounted that before she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, she experienced headaches.
She said she thought it was just a regular headache, therefore, relied on painkillers until “one day it just knocked me off.”
“I couldn’t actually breathe at dawn and was rushed to the hospital so it was there I was told I had to go to Korle-Bu for correct diagnosis. So we went to Korle-Bu for lab tests and it was through the lab test they told us that I have chronic kidney disease,” she said.
According to her, after she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, she was directed to see a Nephrologist. She explained that the Nephrologist at the time, Dr Charlotte Osafo, walked her through what she was going through.
She stated that the Nephrologist advised her to undergo dialysis, but she was skeptical because she observed that older people were the ones suffering from it, whereas she was young.
“She [Nephrologist] took me round the dialysis unit at the time….and I started crying all of a sudden and I told her I only see older people, how come me, a young girl,” he said.
She added that the doctor replied: “that’s how the kidney works, if you don’t take care of it that is what happens.”
She also stated that while walking around the unit, she noticed other patients with swollen body parts due to lack of funds to continue with the procedure, which is costly.
She, therefore, feared she could suffer the same should she undergo the procedure.
This, she said, was because she didn't have any money, adding that she had lost her father at that time and didn't know how to raise funds for it.
He stated that after raising her concerns, she was referred to a dietician to see how the situation could be managed with a diet and she had been on a diet for ten years.
However, through God's intervention, the Despite Group of Companies came through for her and has since paid her bills from 2012 to date.
