The country manager of Visa Ghana, Adoma Peprah Owusu, has disclosed that sales in the e-commerce industry have increased significantly over the last 10 years.
She made the statement in an address at the Graphic Business - Stanbic Breakfast meeting held on Tuesday, 22 March 2022, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.
The meeting is a platform for discussing critical and relevant topics that have the potential to contribute to the economic, social growth, and development of Ghana.
The theme for the first edition of the breakfast meeting in 2022 was "Integration of e-services into the economy; the implication for economic growth, and qualities of life."
At this year’s Graphic Business/Stanbic breakfast meeting, Mrs Peprah, the chairperson of the event, addressed the progress of e-commerce globally and noted the impact of e-commerce in Ghana.
She emphasised that, although sub-Saharan Africa may be one of the world’s smallest e-commerce regions, it shows huge growth potential.
“Leading markets such as South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana are starting to mature,” she said.
She explained further how the Covid-19 pandemic has encouraged major African countries to subscribe to e-commerce services.
“One of the things we’ve seen is that the world covid crisis has contributed to the acceleration of e-commerce in sub-Saharan Africa," she said.
Reading a research report carried out by Visa Ghana, she indicated that in Sub-saharan Africa, the economy is projected to rebound by 5.2% into 2022, while household income levels are projected to increase to about $5000 in 2025.
Mrs Preprah also indicated that according to Statista, revenue from e-commerce in Ghana was about $638 million, a figure estimated to increase in 2022 to about $759million, representing a growth rate of about 19%.
In light of the above revenue projections, Mrs Peprah admonished businesses to render services that can easily be accessible with mobile phones and fully inculcate specific e-commerce approaches into their modes of operation.
