About 600 households at Nobewam in the Juaben municipality of the Ashanti region have received digitalised-potable water.
The residents of the farming community have in the past struggled with access to potable water for daily domestic chores.
The Nobewam community houses over 26,909 residents, mostly engaged in farming and petty trading.
The Safe Water Network, a non-profit organisation, has constructed a mechanised water station in the community, where customers pay a nominal amount for financial sustainability of the water system.
Residents in this community have in the past been challenged with accessibility to safe and adequate water supply.
Francisca Segah, who has lived in the community for the past 20 years, helps her sister, Alice Adjei, to sell gari and beans in the community.
They used to wake up early to join long queues to fetch water for their chores.
“Cooking has been made easy because of access to a potable water system,” Francisca noted.
Alice Adjei added “we really had difficulty in washing our clothes, but not anymore”.
It was all joy at the commissioning of a digitalised water station in the community by the Safe Water Network.
Country Director of the Safe Water Network, Charles Nimako, disclosed their assessment of the community and concluded it was ripe for the project.
“Nobewam is a growing community with some form of economic activities. But they didn’t have water. The pipes that are here have broken down. It is a ripe community for the project,” he said.
The optimised piped connection stations are designed with a distribution network that extends throughout the community to make the cost of the connections to the home equitable.
Customers in the community only have to follow a mobile money transaction prompt to purchase any quantity of water.
Richard, a farmer, together with some residents in the community, is grateful as they do not have to trek for hours for water.
“For about two years now, getting access to water was a challenge. But this water system has improved our lives,” he said.
