The Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has tasked the new Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (Ghana) to demystify taxation and find ways of educating the public on the enormous benefits of taxes.
The new Governing Council was officially inaugurated on Monday, March 21, 2022.
At the inauguration, the Minister urged the Council to come up with short and long term strategies that will help enhance taxation in the country.
"You have work to do. This institution must demystify taxation in such a way that people will look at the benefits and not just the fact that we are taking money from them. Your profession also demands that you create a pipeline of future experts and that is within your remit."
"Make sure in our curriculum something on taxation is done well so that in primary level they see that it is good for me and the country and that it is not a bad thing when they say pay your taxes," he said.
He told the Council the government believes they have something good to offer the country, hence, its establishment.
Dr Yaw Adutwum noted that in the world, the two things people fear most are death and tax. However, they are relaxed on the latter when they see a connect with the monies taken and developmental projects.
He further expressed worry about filing of taxation and how some institutions are unaware of government tax incentives and how to take advantage of them.
Speaking to JoyNews' Maxwell Agbagba on the sidelines of the inauguration, Chairman of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Emmanuel Obeng Asiedu expressed his views on the Electronic Transaction levy (E-levy).
According to Mr Obeng Asiedu, the levy is a good initiative, however, it needs to be looked at to address some concerns.
"It's good one way, it also has its own issues. It is a question of ironing it out to get a level playing field. The main issues are not really tax issues but fiscal issues. They are related to how you use your money or generate it."
