The MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has praised Speaker, Alban Bagbin, for his commitment to adhere to the Standing Orders of the House.
Speaking on JoyNews on Thursday, he said despite the First Deputy Speaker’s penchant to overturn the Speaker's rulings, Alban Bagbin has not abused his authority as the presider of the House.
On Wednesday, Speaker Alban Bagbin expressed dissatisfaction with his deputy, Joesph Osei-Owusu, for dismissing a motion he had admitted to ensure a bipartisan committee is constituted to probe into the government's Covid-19 expenditure.
Although he described the action as unconstitutional, the Speaker refused to overturn the ruling made by the First Deputy Speaker; urging the Minority to follow due process in its quest to disallow the ruling.
"Be that as it may, I shall not be taking any steps to overrule his decision to dismiss the motion as moved by the Ranking Member of the Finance Committee,” he said.
Interacting with host of AM Show, Benjamin Akakpo, Mr Suhuyini said the Speaker "could have come back to undo what the Deputy Speaker did" but charted a different path.
He explained that the Speaker did so to ensure his actions "would not result in some form of power play and conflict."
Mr Suhuyini noted that Mr. Bagbin since assuming the Speakership role has spoken of collaboration between both sides, and he therefore, took a decision that would foster unity.
"It is not always the show off of power and authority at every point in time. It is about working together, understanding that people may have different views and may not really be bent on undermining you and bringing you down. So you are broad-minded. You take their decisions even when you disagree with them in a way you do not bring about conflict. I think that is what Speaker Bagbin has been doing."
"I commend the Speaker for that," the Tamale North MP said while urging government to emulate the approach adopted by the Speaker.
"I'm saying the government must learn from that kind of approach instead of always wanting to show we are in charge and can go burn the sea or hug the transformer. There must be a way for you to work with people you even have authority over without having them feel small."
