A co-convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Felicity Nelson, has said that the police acted in bad faith in dealing with the leading member of the group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor's case.
According to her, the actions of the police do not guarantee public confidence in the Service.
“If the police are acting in good faith, why is it that yesterday evening, the lawyers were at the police station they said they were charging him for a misdemeanor yet when they got to court today, they changed it to a felony. So what changed overnight? Why were the lawyers not informed so they could prepare,” she said.
Speaking on Top Story on Monday, Felicity Nelson stated that the police have not been straightforward in the handling of Mr Barker-Vormawor’s case.
She added that the #FixTheCountry convener was not treated fairly.
Her comment is in connection with the charge of treason felony against a leading member of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor on Monday.
The charge against Mr Barker-Vormawor comes after he took to social media to threaten a coup following displayed pictures from the Majority Leader’s 65th birthday bash showing an ‘E-levy’-designed cake.
“If this E-Levy passes after this cake bullshit, I will do the coup myself. Useless Army!,” Barker-Vormawor said in his Facebook post.
In a subsequent post, he explained the context in which he used the word coup.
He was however arrested on Friday evening after he arrived from the United Kingdom.
According to the Police, Mr Barker-Vormawor’s “post contains a clear statement of intent with a possible will to execute a coup in his declaration of intent to subvert the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
An Ashaiman District Court on Monday, February 14, 2022, remanded Oliver Barker-Vormawor into Police custody for two weeks after the Police charged him with a treason felony.
The co-convener of #FixTheCountry, commenting on the situation, said Mr Barker-Vormawor is not surprised about the outcome of what transpired in court today.
She added that Mr Barker-Vormawor was prepared for this “because he has seen this happening many times.”
“If you look at the trajectory the fact that they ensured they kept him all weekend, even on Saturday the police release a statement around 5 am or so saying that they’re going to take him to court on Monday, so they had already planned that they were going to break that 48-hour role. So once the police touched on that tangent, you already know that they are ready to break the rule and infringe upon your right,” said Felicity Nelson.
Meanwhile, Counsel for Oliver Barker-Vormawor, Mr. Akoto Ampaw has described the charge against his client as “cynical”.
Mr. Akoto Ampaw in an interview with Graphic Online said the charge against Barker- Vormawor amounts to “bad faith” on the part of the prosecution.
The Lead Counsel for the accused also expressed shock over the fresh charges against his client.
He said the prosecution had initially charged his client with a misdemeanor charge which is, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news.
“Until this morning [Monday], it was a misdemeanor, only to appear in court and be told he is being charged with treason felony which has no factual basis,” Mr Akoto Ampaw said.
