The family of murdered activist Ibrahim Mohammed, aka Kaaka Macho, has expressed concern over the arrest and subsequent remand of Oliver Baker-Vormavor, the convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement.
The academic, a key figure in the Movement was charged with felony treason on Monday for comments the Police have described as threatening a coup.
While Kaaka's family feels his detention is linked to his activism and Facebook posts, they hope that justice will be served.
Kaaka's family is taking the arrest seriously, according to a family spokesperson, Nafiu Mohammed, because Mr Barker-Vormawor is not only the family's principal lawyer but also a financial supporter.
“The family is not taking it easily. In terms of finance; he has been helping the family a lot. The family is going to miss him within this short time. But it’s not going to be easy,” he said.
Mr Oliver Barker-Vormawor took to social media to threaten a coup d’état in protest against the passage of the controversial electronic transaction levy (E-Levy).
“If this E-Levy passes after this cake bullshit, I will do the coup myself. Useless Army!” Mr Baker-Vormawor posted on social media.
He was arrested on Friday, February 11, 2022 evening after he arrived from the United Kingdom.
Police say his “post contains a clear statement of intent with a possible will to execute a coup in his declaration of intent to subvert the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.”
According to Mr Nafiu, the family was in touch with Mr Baker-Vormawor until his arrest.
“On that fateful Friday, I was in Accra waiting for him. I had a call from him that he is coming to Ghana so I should meet him latest around 6 pm. So I was in Accra that fateful Friday only to be told he has been arrested,” he said.
