District Chief Executive of the Asikuma Odobeng-Brakwa District Assembly, Lawrence Edutuah-Asiaw has acknowledged the significant impact of the ongoing Multimedia Group’s Classroom Project in his district.

In an engagement with a team from the Multimedia Group on the progress of work, Lawrence Edutuah-Asiaw intimated the relief the Classroom project has brought to his district.

According to him, "if we were going to take up the entire project to execute, you would understand how much it was going to cost the assembly. And so, if a team has taken that upon themselves, and the little commitment we need to give to support, I think it is a good course".

Six kindergarten children died in 2017 when their school block collapsed on them.  Five years after the incident, a six-unit classroom block started by the then government to forestall any future occurrence remains uncompleted.

The District Chief Executive told the visiting Multimedia team - "specifically with Jamara, we know the history, and I need not repeat what we wouldn’t want to hear again. There is a bigger project, that was started some time ago, I’m sure if that project had been completed, I think this issue wouldn’t have really come up".

He went on to express the assembly’s commitment and resolve to support the ongoing Classroom project because ‘’most importantly, look at the number of projects that we need to undertake, it’s only by the grace of God when someone or a team decides to intervene and help us in their own small way," he remarked.

He assured the leader of the team Fiifi Koomson, "so your team should be rest assured - we’re not going to fail on the side, with specifically on what we need to do".

80% of materials have been assembled on site for the construction of the 3-unit-classroom block meant for over three hundred pupils of the Jamara D/A Basic School. Construction is 50% complete.

The Asikuma-Odoben -Brakwa District Assembly is the latest to have supported the project with eight trips of sand for filling the foundation raised and laterite for the production of the remaining hydraform blocks.

Commending the DCE and the Assembly for their support so far, Senior News Editor, Fiifi Koomson remarked that, as part of solutions to the Assembly’s resolve to dealing with the teacher attrition rate in the District, the Classroom Project is equally a critical option for appreciation.

He emphasized that, ‘’sometimes teachers are uncomfortable teaching in certain classroom blocks - it’s the reason they may not even be teaching - yea, so, definitely it will also be an encouragement to some teachers to even do their work and of course, to the children in the community who would not want to go to school because they fear, their classroom will collapse on them’’.

The DCE, Lawrence Edutuah-Asiaw, was grateful to the Multimedia Group and its partners for choosing his district as a beneficiary under the Classroom Project.

He said, "maybe I should add my voice in thanking all those who have been contributing – because I see Emefa (Atiamoah-Eli, Project Lead)  almost every time trying to thank even those who are yet to contribute…. so, we’re grateful to those supporting the Multimedia Group".

The Hydraform Expert supervising work on site, Samuel Kofi Agbenyega, is optimistic that with a sustained labour force and clear weather, work should be completed in a matter of days.

The Multimedia Group’s Classroom Project is under a bigger continental project called ‘Giving for Change’ (GfC). It is being implemented in Ghana by the STAR Ghana Foundation in partnership with the West Africa Civil Society Institute with funding from the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The objective is to explore philanthropy for development at the community level without depending on the central government. The Classroom Project is supported by the Israeli Embassy, Forestry Commission, The Planned City Extension Project, DBS Roofing Sheets and cherished audiences of the Multimedia Group Limited.
