The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has reinstated Prof. Mawutor Avoke to serve his unexpired term as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Institution.
The Winneba High Court, on Thursday, February 3, ordered the University to reinstate Prof. Avoke, including all those who were also affected by a legal tussle that got them dismissed.
The Court presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh also charged the School to pay their salary arrears with retrospective effect from the date they were ‘unlawfully’ removed.
At a brief ceremony to usher him into office on Monday, February 7, Prof. Avoke said the focus of his administration will be on how to ensure peace, unity and reconciliation in the School.
He noted that it is the only way UEW can achieve its set goals and vision, adding that efforts will be made to bring other officials who are yet to receive justice.
“What is urgently required of the University of Education today are unity, reconciliation and peace. We must work together in unity; otherwise, we cannot forge any development agenda. Even as we celebrate today that we are back to the University, we are also mindful of some of our colleagues who have not had the opportunity to come back.”
“In the coming days, we’d work with the Council to see that those other people who were dismissed also come back. We are thankful to the President of the Republic, the Sector Minister, the Governing Council and all others who, through prayers and support, have made this day possible,” he told the media after his induction.
Meanwhile, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang, has been charged to immediately hand over power to Prof. Avoke.
A letter addressed to him on February 4, 2022, read: “On the authority of [that] letter, you are directed to hand over forthwith to Professor Mawutor Avoke, who resumes duty as substantive Vice-Chancellor following a High Court order directing his reinstatement.”
“As you revert to your position as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the UEW, I urge you to assist management of the University in the transition to give full effect to the said High Court order. Again, you are required to support and cooperate with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Avoke, to achieve his vision and goals of the University,” the letter signed by Chairman of the Governing Council said.
