Former Mayor of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and NPP General Secretary hopeful, has blamed the rejection of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) by the Minority Members of Parliament on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Musah Superior, who is also the Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission (FC), the struggles that the government is going through to pass the e-levy is because of the party's abysmal performance in the 2020 polls.
He said the party campaigned vigorously in the 2016 polls which resulted in the massive victory for the party.
Apart from the land slide victory by the party, they also won 169 out of the 275 parliamentary seats.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) then in government won 106 seats.
However, the number of Parliamentary seats for the NPP after the 2020 election reduced and placed them on equal pegging with the NDC. Both parties had 137 apiece with an independent candidate who later decided to join the NPP side of the House.
In his view, this incompetence in the 2020 elections have led to the current struggle by government to pass the e-levy.
‘‘They are disappointing and should be replaced. Our membership in Parliament reduced from 169 to 137. They have made us lose 32 parliamentary seats. Today, we want to pass an important financial document to get more money to do good things for our country, our effort is deliberately been frustrated by this incompetent bunch of people. We shouldn’t accept that, of course if we had 169 members, the e-levy discussion would have been history,’’ he stated.
Narrowing his 13-minute interaction with the press in the Upper West Regional capital, Wa down, the outspoken politician said the General Secretary of any political is the chief executive of the party and for that matter everything about the party revolves around him.
‘‘Your job is not only to win elections but to look after the party after you have won elections and if you think your job is only to win elections, I am sorry you have to leave the job because you don’t even understand the job properly. We’ve got to win elections and after elections we look after the party because we are going to call the party after the 4 years. If you leave the party unattended after 4 years, you are going to meet the party operating at half strength."
Iddrisu Musah Superior opined that the NPP has done so well in government and needs not to surrender the governance of the country to the NDC.
He said there is the need to galvanize the support base of the party from the length and breadth of the country to enable them deliver on NPP projects and win the 2024 election so as to continue to implement good policies and programmes for the citizenry.
According to him, for the party to retain power, there should be change in the party which he called a silent revolution.
"The position of the General Secretary is not for serving special groups of the NPP. The Office of the General Sectary is open and is for everybody and if you think you have the courage, vision and the stamina, of course you can contest for it. I am contesting for it and I am confident that in July, the NPP delegates will give me the mandate and I will deliver to make NPP win the 2024 election,’’ he concluded.
