Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana, Dr Kojo Asante, has stated that his office will press hard until the recent CDD study yields a positive result.
His comment comes after a study by the Centre revealed that nine individuals allegedly engaging in illicit activities funded some political parties during the 2020 elections.
These activities include illegal mining popularly known as galamsey, illegal oil distribution, and fraudulent businesses.
The financiers are reported to have funded the campaigns with the aim of making friends to ensure the sustenance of their businesses should the recipients of the funds win the polls.
Commenting on the development on Top Story on Wednesday, Dr Asante indicated that measures are going to be put in place to address the situation.
“We’ve already put together a small group because we want to do a draft road map. We think there is a window between now and 2023 where we can have a small look at some short-term measures to begin to turn the corner and we are going to push very hard to get some action taken along this side,” he said.
He added that there is the “need to take in all what is going on within the context of the sub-region and begin to correct some of these things before they get out of hand.”
Dr Asante said the rising cost of politicisation is a contributory factor for the happening.
He further noted that if the situation persists then the country’s democracy will be damaged beyond repairs.
“If we don’t do something about it the State will be completely captured,’” he reiterated.
