Asante Gold Corporation, owners of the Bibiani and the Kubi Gold Mine in Ghana, have gone to aid victims of the recent explosion at Apeatse.
Items donated include water containers, refuse bins, bags of cement, roofing sheets, toiletries, footwear, footballs for the children, and information center accessories.
The company says the move is in furtherance of its corporate social responsibility and an answer to a humanitarian from the people of Apiatse.
One of the company's Directors, Naadia Abdul Aziz, said the incident should be a learning curve for all mining companies.
“Unfortunately, it has happened. And as Ghanaians ourselves, we feel like it is our duty to come in and support our fellow Ghanaians.”
“This shows that there’s a lot to be done. We are mining firms ourselves and we are learning from this as well. I hope things are put in place to make sure that it doesn’t happen again”.
Municipal Chief Executive for Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, Dr. Isaac Dasmani said the incident has thrown the area’s revenues off-balance and called for more such assistance to get the affected on their feet.
“We have just started the year and just started our revenue mobilisation that this incident happened. The whole of last week, all the assembly workers were here to render support to help our brothers and sisters.
“We have been feeding them three times a day at a cost. Other organisations came in to support but majority of the cost is bought by the assembly.
“Since we brought them here, they have started moving around, preparing their own food. So we are pleading and appealing to other organisations to render their support to ensure that at the end of the day, we give our brothers and sisters a befitting life.”
