The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has assured consumers that it is working to address the erratic water supply being experienced in some parts of the country.
In a statement signed by the company's Head of Public Relations and Communications, Stanley Martey, GWCL acknowledged the complaints from consumers, "especially in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central, Western and the Northern Regions".
The company therefore stated that, “everything possible is being done to ameliorate the situation.”
Commenting on the cause of the challenge, the GWCL said "the impact of the dry season on the raw water sources, has been compounded by activities of illegal alluvial mining, popularly known as galamsey and we wish to assure the general public that, the company, together with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, are working assiduously to improve on water delivery in the country."
Consequently, the company has announced some interim conservation measures; "consumers should report all burst pipes and leakages immediately to the nearest GWCL district offices, Customer Services Centres and Fault Offices.
The GWLC is also imploring the general public to, “repair all leakages in homes, like overflowing reservoirs and dripping taps and valves”; warning that, the little drops may lead to increased water bills.
“Shut all taps when not in use; moderate the use of treated water for car washing by resorting to the use of buckets, instead of hoses; cease indiscriminate watering of lawns with treated water”, the company advised.
The GWCL has further directed all district offices to “announce to days when water will be flowing so customers can store some water”. This is in addition to designated phone numbers which consumers can contact in case of burst pipes and other challenges.
“You can also send Google GPS locations, pictures and videos of burst [pipes]on the GWCL WhatsApp lines 0555123393, 0555155524 (WhatsApp information only and not calls).
The general public can call GWCL on these numbers; 0207385089, 0207385090. The toll free line is 0800 40 000 for Vodafone cell and land lines only and 0302 218240 for all other networks”, the statement said.
The Ghana Water Company Limited also wants consumers to “report all persons engaged in illegal connections, by-passes, and all malpractices against GWLC”.
