Ari Lennox is leaving social media indefinitely after receiving backlash for expressing her love for Ghana following a recent vacation to the West African country last month.
The “Shea Butter Baby” singer shared the news just before the weekend last Friday, Jan. 7, in a series of Twitter posts. “Hey, love y’all,” she told fans just hours after the unexpected incident unfolded. “I’m good, in the studio too,” the 30-year-old added, seemingly hinting at new music since her last musical release.
Hey ❤️ love y’all. I’m good 😘 in the studio too

In a later post, the Washington, D.C., native wrote, “My heart hasn’t changed. Nobody can take the peace I felt away from me,” She added, “I do not like Twitter. Or SM rather. So I’m giving my passwords to my label. Hopefully, this will last. Love you all and thanks for the kindness.”

The latest update comes on the heels of criticism the Grammy-nominated songstress faced after opening up about her admiration for Ghana and how the country helped her feel more connected to her ancestors.
The star, whose real name is Courtney Shanade Salter, visited the country last month to perform at the Afrochella concert held on Dec. 28, 2021. She seemingly used the remainder of her time there to explore parts of Accra, the country’s capital.
The “Apartment” singer shared photos and posts and had nothing but positive things to say about the city, including how “it’s a rare and good feeling to consistently wake up with peace and happiness. I really owe that to Ghana.”
Elsewhere, she explained, “suddenly crying the first time going to a beach in Ghana.” She added, “It was so triggering, And I didn’t feel alone. My heart ached/aches for my ancestor. It was a surreal experience.”
Many people online felt the statements were disingenuous. Others questioned if the singer’s ancestors were even from Ghana — prompting the star to delete all her posts related to the trip from Twitter and a photo she shared on Instagram.
Still, Lennox’s fans were quick to come to her defense, including one person who wrote, “Africans really bullied Ari Lennox into deleting pics of her Ghana visit. Wtf?” They added, “Y’all complain that we make a mockery of Africans but when we try to appreciate the beauty of the continent, y’all say no to that too. SMDH.”
