A total of 2,924 lives were lost through road accidents in 2021. This represents a 12.9% increase in deaths as compared to 2020.
The year 2020 saw 2,589 persons killed in road accidents. Unfortunately, this means 335 more persons died in 2021.
Some 15,680 persons suffered injuries in the year 2020 from 15,972 accidents. Compared to the 2020 figures, it can be seen yet again that more injuries were suffered. 1,106 more accidents were recorded, with 163 more injuries.
Accra witnessed the most accidents in the period under review, with as many as 5,589 cases.
The Ashanti region follows closely with 3,470 cases. However, the North East region recorded the least number of accidents with just 58 incidents.
2,930 pedestrians were knocked down in the year 2021. This is 202 more than the figures recorded in 2020. 831 of those knocked down died, while the rest were left with injuries.
Driving without a license remains a major offence, recording as many as 1,299 cases as against just 616 cases recorded in 2020.
The Ashanti region saw the most offences with 653 cases, followed closely by Accra with 309 cases.
The state obtained 2.5 million cedis from fines imposed on road traffic offenders in 2021. Twenty-eight persons were ordered to serve jail terms as 4,799 were found guilty of various offences.
