A staff of the Electoral Commission (EC) has been allegedly shot during a suspected robbery attack in Walewale.
Sources say the victim is currently being treated by a traditional herbalist.
This information comes after claims by the victim's family that the Walewale Government Hospital where Wisdom Akopia had sought treatment, denied him admission.
Wisdom Akopia was attacked on Friday, December 17, by two armed men while returning from an errand. Interacting with JoyNews correspondent, Eliasu Tanko, he indicated that an attempt to defend himself resulted in his attackers firing at him.
"I dropped my brother around 10:20pm. After I got to the Astroturf, I saw two people on a motorbike. When I got closer to that road, they veered into my direction and I thought it was a wrongful overtaking. I stopped my motorbike.
They did not speak and all of a sudden, the one riding the motorbike held my neck and hit my head. He hit me more than three times.
"I had to defend myself and so I also held his neck. The other person got down and removed his gun. I started running and I heard him say 'shoot.' I was fortunate that he shot my thigh," he narrated.
Reacting to claims that he was not treated at the Walewale Government Hospital, Mr Akopia revealed that for several hours, no medical doctor approached him to attend to his wound.
"We were there for a very long time. The following day, we stood there for several hours. No one came to me and said this is the doctor. Normally, when you visit the hospital, the following day, the doctor comes to see the patient but I didn't notice anyone. My relatives then asked why I have not been attended to."
According to him, there appeared to be a disagreement between his family members and nurses.
For that reason "we opted for a different alternative to get me treated. We used the local way to remove the bullets."
He disclosed that about 13 bullets were removed and he is likely to return to have the rest removed.
Management of the Walewale Government Hospital have however dispelled the claims made by the victim and his family.
Insisting on anonymity, a member of management revealed that Wisdom Akopia requested to be released so he could be treated at home.
Meanwhile, the Police Service has stated that they are on a hunt for the two men who carried out the criminal act.
