Managing Director for the China Geo Engineering Corporation, Eric Yang has said that it is worrying that Ghana have all the natural resources but still imports food of over $2 billion annually.
Mr Eric Yang made the comments at Battor to a group of journalists who visited the demonstration farm belonging to the China Geo Engineering Corporation.
"Ghana has so many natural resources you have and yet you are importing food for more than $2 billion a year, you import rice, corn, sugar, tilapia and even tomatoes and other foods and I think this shouldn't be the case for Ghana with all the natural resources, "Mr Eric Yank said.
Mr Yang noted that there's so much potential and medium or small-sized farms can be spread or established around the country and not only in Volta Region to help solve the unemployment issues in the country.
Mr Yang noted that as a country with a lot of potentials and huge lands, there was no need to import food of any kind from outside the country but instead have enough to feed the entire country and even export.
"Even you have two big sugar factories but still import sugar now you're spending $2 billion to import food, Ghana it’s not the best " he lamented
He noted that with the modern ways of farming, the country can totally transform the fortunes of the agriculture sector and stop importing food to the country which would also enable the government gain more revenue from the sector.
He said government, in collaboration with private investors, things will go well for the agriculture sector
The China Geo Engineering Corporation is operating in large skill farming and fish farming as well animal husbandry with a local content based staff,
The District Chief Executive for North Tongu, Osborne Divine Fenu noted that government is committed to making sure that issues regarding the agriculture sector in the district are well looked and improved for the total benefit of the people of the area and the country as a whole.
