The Police says its new special operation to clamp down on recalcitrant V8 drivers will be pursued without any consideration to the status of offenders.
They have directed all officers to arrest drivers who abuse road traffic regulations, especially drivers of V8 vehicles.
On Tuesday, the Police arrested the Nhyiaeso MP, Dr Stephen Amoah, over road traffic offences, and he is being put through the court process.
He was arrested with six other drivers charged with offences such as careless driving, dangerous driving and causing road obstruction, among others around the Airport by-pass.
In an interview with JoyNews, the Director of Operations at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Dr Samuel Sasu Mensah, said police officers have been adequately trained on road traffic regulations.
"What we have done is that we have educated them about the need to enforce the content of the Road Traffic Act 683 of 2004, the Road Traffic Regulation 2012 and when they are enforcing the rules and regulations, what we have told them is that they should know how to interpret the law, they should grasp the content of the law, and they should interpret it without any hindrance."
"They should do it as it is. The law is no respecter of any person, and as we say, everybody is equal before the law, whether you are driving a V8 vehicle or a trotro," he said.
Arrest of Nhyiaeso MP
Meanwhile, the Nhyiaeso lawmaker has denied assertions of failing to appear in court after being arrested by the Police for offending road traffic regulations.
Speaking on NewsNight on Thursday, Dr Amoah said the whole story resulted from a miscommunication on the part of the Police.
“The Prosecutor himself came there and informed the court that it was a miscommunication, and they pleaded with the court to either withdraw or quash the bench warrant. I was surprised because I had never been invited to go to the court, never."
"Even the charge sheet was given to me today in the presence of my lawyers, and they were shocked, so all those issues, all those hullaballoo, I didn’t understand what was going on. I was so shocked I’m shocked about everything, and all that I can say is that because the issue is in court, I can’t say much,” he told Evans Mensah.
Some four drivers who were arrested together with him have been fined an amount of GH₵1,800 each or, in default, serve a three-month prison term.
The others are Dominic Atuahene-Ababio, Daniel Boateng, Emmanuel Kofi Ofori and Joseph Brown.
One other driver who appeared in Court, Thomas Atinga, was made to sign a bond of good behaviour for three months or, in default serve a three-month prison term, the Police have said.
