Ghanaians are celebrating individuals in the agricultural sector who through their efforts have provided the country with sufficient food.

The first Friday in December has been set aside by government to commemorate farmers and fishermen nationwide. This year's celebration fell on Friday, December 3. It is on the theme: “Planting for food and jobs - Consolidating food systems in Ghana."

The celebration will be held at Cape Coast in the Central Region. 

Twitter has been buzzing since morning with a mammoth of well-wishes flooding the media space. Users have extoled the relevant players in the agric sector for their immense contribution to the country's economic growth.

They say to all farmers who plant, harvest and provide food for mother Ghana despite the emergence of the coronavirus disease, "ayekoo."

Agriculture contributes 19.7 per cent of Ghana’s current Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to Israel’s Trade and Economic mission to Ghana.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have called for support from government to enable farmers use mechanized equipment during the production process. A move from the traditional way of farming they say will enable farmers work efficiently and effectively.
