The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has begun distributing fish feed to some institutions and fish farmers in the Central and Western regions
Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, says the support for the institutions and the fish farmers is to shore up the fish stock in the country and also serve as a source of employment for young people in the country.
Madam Hawa Koomson with her team was at Ajumako, Ekumfi and finally made her last stop in the Central Region at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prisons.
At the Ankaful Maximum Security Prisons, the authorities there have initiated an aquaculture development project aimed at supporting the feeding of the inmates and also train the inmates in the aquaculture business.
Handing over the fish feed to the officials at the Ankaful Maximum Prisons, the minister prevailed on the authorities to train the inmates in aquaculture development so they would be properly equipped when they are out of the prisons.
She stated that government would offer support for the inmates to establishment such fish farming enterprises when they are released from prison.
She said: “The motivation is to get them trained into Aquaculture, especially those inmates here. They are here to be reformed, and they need to be equipped some skills when they are out of here. In that way, they would be a bit independent.”
The minister was delighted that the vision of aquaculture development in the country was on course and urged institutions and individuals to get on board because government would support them on that endeavour.
“The country’s marine resources are fast depleting and effort are being made by the Fisheries Ministry to shore it up. When we say aquaculture development for food and jobs, this is what we mean. Government is willing to support people with capital,” she assured.
Acting Central Regional Commander of the Ghana Prisons Service, DDP Abraham Allotey thanked the Ministry and promised them of their desire to equip the inmates with skills and also to make the fish farming succeed.
The Distribution of Fish Feed to fish farmers continues in the western region with the minister campaigning for protection of the marine resources.
