The NDC's flagbearer in the 2020 Presidential elections, John Dramani Mahama has accused President Akufo-Addo of causing young people to lose confidence in Ghana's democracy.

Addressing a teeming crowd of party enthusiasts at the Nii Amui Park on Tuesday, the former President explained that, many young people have become disinterested in Ghana's current democratic discourse.

This he said, is a result of the failure of President Akufo-Addo to fulfill the litany of promises he made to Ghanaians in his bid to become the President of Ghana.

"But for me, the danger I see ahead is that the Akufo-Addo administration has destroyed the confidence of our young people in our democracy. Our young people no longer believe in our democracy, because of the way that it's no longer working for them. When you make promises you can't fulfill, it undermines the credibility of our democracy; and that is the stock in trade of the NPP", Mr. Mahama said.

The former President also attributed the growing disinterest to the bastardization of democratic institutions by the current regime.

Citing the Judiciary, for example, John Mahama said the Judiciary appears to have lost its credibility, causing many Ghanaians, especially the Ghanaian youth to become apathetic.

Touching on the current state of the economy, John Mahama also lamented the increasing levels of borrowing by the current Akufo-Addo administration and the series of lies that have been peddled by the President since he assumed office.

Former President John Dramani Mahama also wondered why some people choose to applaud President Akufo-Addo and even compare him to the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In his view, that kind of comparison should not be started in the first place; stressing that the current suffering in Ghana, occasioned by President Akufo-Addo cannot be compared to any other period of hardship the country has ever experienced.

The former President is currently on a two-day tour of the Greater Accra Region to interact with party executives and supporters of the NDC. The tour on Tuesday took him to Dodowa, Tema, and Ashaiman.

The ‘Thank You’ tour is expected to continue on Wednesday, with a closing engagement at the Kempinski Hotel, where he will be expected to extensively address current issues in the country.
