NAGRAT threatens strike in lieu of salary increment

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has threatened that its members will lay down their tools if their salaries are not increased.

The teachers claim that their current salary levels cannot make them survive the “current economic malaise.”

Addressing the press in Accra on Monday, Vice-President of the Graduate Teachers, Jacob Anaaba, called on the government to “reconvene an emergency joint public service negotiation committee to review the salaries of the Ghanaian Worker and, for that matter, the Ghanaian teacher.”

In April last year, the Association called for the salaries of public workers to be increased by at least 15%.

NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu, contended that the cost of living has gone up, hence, the need for a similar adjustment in salaries.

But the Tripartite Committee resolved to increase salaries by 4% - 7% for 2020; a decision that does not sit well with the three teacher Unions.

The three are; the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).

The Graduate Teachers last embarked on a strike in September, 2019.

Their grievances then, were over the nonpayment of salary arrears and delayed promotions.
