Accra Great Olympics forward, Maxwell Abbey is targeting the top goal scorer award, after his hattrick against newly-promoted Accra Lions.
The forward, who scored all of Dade Boys’ three goals, became the first player to score a hattrick this season. He reckons he needs to push harder to end the season as top scorer.
“Every striker is aiming to be crowned the goal scorer. So that’s my aim – to score more goals for the club and make positive impact for the team,” Abbey said in his post-match interview.
The first of the hattrick was one executed with precision and carefully rehearsed technique. Abbey, controlling the ball and from about 20 yards out and with little back-lift, finessed the ball off the bar of Appiah Kubi’s goalpost.
After that goal, he attempted the strike again and saw his effort hit the post again, just its wrong side this time round.
Abbey revealed he has been working extra hours at training and is appreciative of the efforts of the technical team and players who were all hungry to bounce back after their opening day draw.
“I give thanks to the almighty God and the technical men, especially the coach for his encouragement to us. Before this game we drew an away game we weren’t expecting to draw. So we had to comeback home and go to the drawing board and do our things right
“On the training grounds everyone was determined to take the three points at all cost in this particular game. For me too, I always come to the training grounds early and do something before we start our training so it’s not something new for me or a surprise for me I was able to score this kind of goal,” Abbey said.
The forward will be looking to back his words when Olympics play Legon Cities in yet another Accra derby.
Olympics are on four points, and currently third on the table behind King Faisal and Kotoko.
