Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Samuel Kwaku Bonsu, has lamented the mentality with which students in the country approach education.
He said that they were more fixated on making the grades rather than focusing on gaining knowledge.
Prof. Kwaku Bonsu, speaking on Joy FM's Personality Profile with Lexis Bill on Thursday, said that the situation had resulted in educational institutions producing students who were not ready for the job market.
"We churn out students who are not prepared to do anything on our job market. It's sad, but it's the reality," he highlighted
He recounted how a student in Denmark once pleaded with him to give her a failed grade because she did not gain a proper understanding of the course.
"Students abroad are keen to learn. I have concluded that a vast majority of our students are in school for the jubilee,"
Prof. Samuel K. Bonsu asked university management's to do a self-introspection of how it awards certificates to students.
"We have to start looking at how we train people rather than give certificates. Universities should not be certificate mills. They should be training grounds for the way we are supposed to be," he said.
Asked what he would want to be remembered for, Prof. Bonsu said, "that he did his best for humanity."
"I can't stand to see people suffer. So I try to do the best I can be to ensure that I help anybody who is in any difficulty."
