For many in the labour market, a higher remuneration, geographical location, a rise in rank, or better working conditions are among reasons they would bid farewell to their current organisation to another, either in the same sector or not.
But according to Patricia Obo-Nai, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone, her reason for leaving Tigo, an institution she had given four years of her life to, to impact the telecommunication industry, was simply to garner new experience.
Speaking to Lexis Bill on Joy FM's Personality Profile, Mrs Obo-Nai revealed that she allowed herself to be poached to Vodafone in 2011 as a Technology Director, the exact role she played at Tigo because the former offered "fixed infrastructure."
"They had the fixed infrastructure. You know Ghana Telecom has copper, they have Fibre - huge assets and I didn't have that experience from Tigo. So for me, it was a new challenge and a new learning space.
"I remember through my interview the bosses were like 'you haven't done fixed' and I was like that is why I want to join you. I will learn it and it will give me enough drive every morning to come in and do well," she recounted on Thursday.
She described her relationship with her erstwhile organisation as a conducive one filled with so much love. According to her, if her move was solely based on a higher remuneration rather than experience, there would not have been the need for a switch.
"For me, I needed to grow, build my competence..I was very clear in my mind that I needed a new experience," she stressed.
Reminiscing her experience, she encouraged the youth to be authors of their own fate and define their growth and development per their capabilities.
"I always say to the young ones when it comes to your career, it is really about you. Nobody defines your pace. You must define your pace and know when it is time to move."
Mrs Patricia Obo-Nai is an engineer and the first Ghanaian to become Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana.
She won the Woman of the Year Honour at the 6th edition of the EMY Africa Awards held in Accra.
Mrs Obo-Nai was among 30 outstanding personalities from diverse fields of endeavour who were celebrated at the awards ceremony for their remarkable commitment to societal progress.
Her list of awards includes Africa’s Most Respected CEO in Telecoms (Dubai, UAE), Telecom CEO of the Year (Ghana Information Technology and Telecom Awards), Telecom Personality of the Year (National Communications Awards), and HR-Oriented CEO of the Year (HR Focus Awards).
