Following a contentious argument on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday over the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021 bill, a former Director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana has called on the opposition National Democratic Congress to do some introspection on their stance on the bill.
Professor Emeritus Abena Takyiwaa Manuh said the recent use of violent language against opponents of the anti-LGBT bill and the LGBT community in Ghana is in sharp contrast with the tenets of the international organization of social democratic parties, Progressive Alliance, of which the NDC is a registered member.
She said, “this legislation will actually embolden this [hate and violence against the LGBT community] that is why yesterday we had an NDC communicator saying ‘stone and kill Gays and Lesbians in your communities.”
She said one of the aspirations of the Progressive Alliance dubbed, Commitment amongst other things is, “to create decent jobs and fight unemployment, to ensure fair income distribution or redistribution of wealth and gender equality counter increased inequality in societies, fight for LGBTQI+ rights and against intolerance and racism…”
According to her, for a party that belongs to an organization that is committed to fighting for the rights of LGBT communities, it is double standards for the same party to be sponsoring “hateful legislation” and attacking dissidents.
She added that it gives the impression that the opposition NDC has been playing a two-faced game with Ghanaians and the international community.
“So I would urge that the party looks at its own associations, you have a social democratic party that is now promoting this hateful legislation. So does the NDC have one face at home and another face abroad?” she asked.
