The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, will today make his first appearance in court after two months in office.
Mr Agyebeng will be prosecuting a tax evasion case involving the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga.
The case was started by former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, who resigned in November 2020.
The former Special Prosecutor had charged Mr Ayariga and six others for breaching procurement processes in purchasing some ambulances for his constituency and tax evasion in the importation of some “luxurious” vehicles.
During the trial, an Accra High Court presided over by Justice Afia Serwaah Asare-Botwe on Friday, May 7, acquitted and discharged all seven accused of breaching procurement laws.
But the latter remains outstanding, and the trial resumes on Monday.
The lawmaker is being accused of abusing his office after clearing three Toyota V8 vehicles without paying tax.
He is also sued for an illegal foreign exchange transfer from Ghana to Dubai without having the required license to undertake such a transaction.
One Kendrick Marfo, a car rental dealer, is linked to the case for purchasing the “fraudulent” vehicles from Mr Ayariga.
The 50-year-old is also accused of deliberately evading tax in the purchase of the vehicles from the lawmaker.
