Security at the Supreme Court has come up strongly as a concern for some of the county's judges in executing their duties.
The President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, disclosed that the Supreme Courtroom and other lower courts lack CCTV cameras to ensure surveillance.
"As of today, we still don't have CCTV cameras in the Supreme Courtroom, let alone the other courtrooms," he said.
According to him, the situation threatens the safety of legal practitioners who frequent the facility for their day-to-day activities.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the meeting, Justice Dzamefe recounted a situation where hooligans have stormed some courts to whisk away an accused person standing trial.
He believes these and other related incidents can be avoided if the management makes a conscious effort to safeguard security "both in court and out of court."
"We daresay management is taken the security of judges for granted," he added on Wednesday, September 29.
The Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana also raised issues with their transportation as many professionals operate without official vehicles.
"Though it is part of service, especially for professionals, some of them still do not have cars or, at best, using old rickety vehicles," Justice Dzamefe indicated.
He urged the Judicial Council to accelerate efforts to supply some vehicles it had promised to disburse to make judicial officials comfortable discharging their duties.
"The lower courts are the front desk of the judiciary. Every effort must be made to make them comfortable. They all deserve cars to work with. The bottom line is, we are all judges performing the same functions."
They also highlighted issues about allowance payment delays, logistical challenges, among other issues which they believe will improve justice delivery if adequately addressed.
