Authorities of Prempeh College Experimental M/A Basic C School in Kumasi are appealing for help after a rainstorm ripped off the roof of one of their classrooms.
Pupils in classes four, five and six have been exposed to the vagaries of the weather, studying under weak, patched-roof classrooms.
The classrooms flood when it rains, disrupting learning hours.
Established in 1971, the Prempeh College Experimental M/A Basic School has not seen any major facelift.
With increasing school enrollment, the structures were constructed in 2015 to house pupils in the basic C primary.
However, roof structure and wooden divisions have since grown weak and part of it caved in after close of school on Thursday.
Speaking to JoyNews, some of the pupils complained that classes get disrupted anytime it rains.
“Our bags and books get wet anytime it rains. So we always have to dry them before we use them again. And we always have to clean our flooded classrooms before classes begins,” a student said.
Another added, “When it’s windy, the roof shakes as though there is an earthquake. When it rains our classrooms get flooded so our teachers are forced to let us close anytime it begins to rain.”
Head Teacher of the school, Barbara Ohene Budu disclosed that the situation has forced the school to combine large classes in the midst of Covid 19.
She added that urgent help is needed to forestall any tragedy.
