The National Media Commission(NMC) has appointed a committee of experts to examine ways to transform the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) into a more efficient public service broadcaster.
The eight-member committee led by Yaw Asamaoh is expected to consult a wide range of stakeholders including past and present GBC board, management, staff, union and other identifiable groups in Ghana in order to make recommendations to the Commission.
In a press statement signed by the Executive Secretary, George Sarpong, the NMC stated that it is important for all stakeholders to cooperate with the Committee for the betterment of GBC.
The Committee’s terms of reference include examining the current state of GBC with regards to funding, institutional and operational challenges among others and recommend a vision for a transformed GBC that responds to considerations of Ghana’s national interest and development aspirations.
Other terms of reference include defining a future for GBC and examining GBCs Public Service Broadcasting functions within the context of pluralistic media in Ghana, socio-cultural, political and economic considerations and Government, professional, public interest and private sector competitive demands.
The other members of the committee are Mrs. Wilna Quarmyne (Media Development Expert), Dr. Gilbert Tietaah, (Academic and media researcher), Ms. Rita Sraha (Management Consultant), Mr. Daniel Owusu Nyanmpong (Lawyer.
Others are Mr. Kofi Yeboah Kodie (Communications Engineer), Mr. Berifi Apenteng (Media Expert and Lawyer), Ms. Cecilia Eduful, (former Manager of NMC’s Media Monitoring Centre) as the secretary.
